Breast Lift

A breast lift, also known as mastopexy, reshapes and lifts breasts that have sagged due to weight loss, pregnancy/breast feeding, or simply over time. The operation improves the position of your breasts and nipples on your chest resulting in a perkier, fuller, and more youthful appearance. For patients who desire larger breasts or a fuller upper breast, an implant can be placed at the time of surgery to further reshape the breast. A breast lift can also be combined with autologous fat grafting, or using your own fat obtained from liposuction, which is injected in order to reshape and more subtly enlarge the breast. Dr. Duggal performs all types of breast lifts including donut, short scar, and traditional, so the operation is truly tailored to each patient’s individual goals and anatomy.

  • Who is a good candidate for a breast lift?

Any woman who feels her breasts have sagged or deflated after pregnancy, breast feeding, weight loss, or simply aging is a good candidate for a breast lift. Depending on the size of your breasts, a breast reduction may be a better procedure, or breast augmentation may be recommended.

  • What does the surgery involve?

A mastopexy is done under general anesthesia in the operating room and can be an outpatient procedure.

In the majority of cases, incisions are placed around the nipple and in a vertical line from the bottom of the nipple to the crease underneath the breast (called a “vertical mastopexy”). In some cases an additional incision may be required in the crease underneath the breast (called a “Wise pattern masopexy”).

A mastopexy augmentation is the combination of a breast lift and breast augmentation done at the same time.

  • What is the recovery like?

In the majority of cases, you may resume light activities after surgery and full activities in 2-3 weeks. Your breasts will initially be sore and swollen but this will improve over the first few weeks. It may take up to 3-6 months to see the final results. The incisions will heal over the first few weeks and the scars will continue to improve over the first year.

  • What are the risks of surgery?

Complications after mastopexy are low. The most common minor complication is a small area of delayed wound healing that may require a bandaid or small dressing for a few weeks. Depending on the degree of differences between your breasts which exist preoperatively, there may be slight differences in the breasts after surgery. For healthy women the risk of a blood clot or a complication from anesthesia is very low.
