Chin augmentation can have a dramatic effect on the appearance of your profile by strengthening the front of the jawline. This procedure is used alone or in combination with other procedures such as rhinoplasty or facelifts and neck lifts. The goal for any facial rejuvenation procedure is to restore or improve the natural contours of the face. Chin implants do this very well by giving patients a more confident and lifted profile appearance.
Younger patients may opt to have a chin implant performed with their rhinoplasty procedure. Many times, the goal of rhinoplasty is to improve the downward slope of the nose or droopy nasal tip. This effect is accentuated when the chin is weak or recessed. Augmenting the chin at the time of the rhinoplasty procedure, can give that extra perfected result and restore confidence in the profile appearance.
Some older patients who are considering surgery to improve the neckline and jawline, may also benefit from a chin augmentation. The goal of lower face and neck lifts is to lift and remove the jowls, sharpen and define the jawline, and remove the excess skin in the neck, blunting the natural chin neck angle. Chin implants can improve results by strengthening the front of the jawline, thus making the neck line more defined.
Specific surgical techniques
The chin augmentation procedure usually involves inserting an implant onto the bone of the chin. In some cases, the chin bone can be reduced in size if it is naturally too strong. Sometimes liposuction can be recommended to remove the fatty tissue around the chin and neck areas as well.
To augment the chin, an incision is made in the natural crease line under the chin or inside the lower lip. The tissues are lifted to accommodate the implant, which is constructed of synthetic yet natural-feeling materials. Implants are available in a variety of sizes and shapes to achieve the appearance you desire. They are placed under to covering of the bone so there is no risk or movement or displacement over the years.
After the surgery
You may feel a stretched, tight feeling after surgery. Some swelling and bruising is natural in the chin area which resolves in about a week.
